Christopher Kite (virginals)

Christopher Kite gained a degree at Oxford before commencing further study at the Royal College of Music. Whilst at the College he won the Raymond Russell Memorial Prize for harpsichord, and in 1977 was a prizewinner in the International Harpsichord Competition in Bruges. He was appointed Professor of Harpsichord at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1974. He has given many recitals in London and throughout the United Kingdom. His numerous concert tours abroad have included solo harpsichord and fortepiano recitals in Sweden and the USA, and for the Flanders and Llubljana Festivals, and he has toured Europe extensively with the Florilegium. He broadcasts regularly on BBC Television and Radio, and has also recorded programmes for many foreign radio networks. He also recorded the piano sequences for Peter Shaffer's award-winning play Amadeus. His new edition of Handel's Eight Great Suites, a selection of Scarlatti sonatas and the complete piano sonatas of John Field have been published to widespread acclaim. Current editorial projects include the complete keyboard works of Purcell and Handel's Aylesford Pieces. Christopher Kite also contributed the chapter on keyboard instruments for How Music Works.
