The role of Marguerite in Gounod’s Faust at the 2002 Savonlinna Opera Festival can be considered as Helena’s professional breakthrough. She made her debut with Connecticut Opera in the same role during the 2003–2004 season, also appearing in Genoa in Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims, in Antwerp in Strauss’s Arabella, and in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at the Saxon State Opera, Dresden.
Helena has performed regularly at the Finnish National Opera since 1999, starring in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Puccini’s La Bohème, Madetoja’s Pohjalaisia, Mozart’s The Magic Flute and world premieres such as Jüri Reinvere’s Puhdistus and Sebastian Fagerlund’s Autumn Sonata.
Outside of Finland, Helena has featured in Kurt Weill’s Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Berg’s Wozzeck, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg and Schreker’s Der ferne Klang.
More recently, Helena performed in Simon Stone’s critically acclaimed production of Korngold’s Die tote Stadt, a staged version of Dvorák’s Stabat mater, Johann Gottlieb Naumann’s Gustav Wasa, Janácek’s Kát’a Kabanová and again appeared at the Savonlinna Opera Festival.
Helena’s recent concert highlights include singing Sibelius’s tone poem Luonnotar in Sydney, London, Amsterdam and Ottawa; Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Lucerne Festival; Unsuk Chin’s snagS&Snarls in Stavanger, Helsinki and London; Hafliði Hallgrímsson’s new song cycle in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Reykjavík; Beethoven’s Missa solemnis in London, Bonn, Paris and New York; Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder; and debuts with the Berliner Philharmoniker and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Her recordings include a solo album of Lieder by Leevi Madetoja, Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Aleksis Kivi and Auringon talo, and an album of Sibelius’s Spirit of Nature (including a world premiere of orchestral versions of ‘Höstkväll’ and ‘Hertig Magnus’). Other recordings include Puumala’s Anna Liisa, Perttu Haapanen’s Ladies’ Room, Beethoven’s ninth symphony and Fagerlund’s Autumn Sonata.
