Michael Spyres (tenor)

Michael Spyres was born in Missouri where he grew up in a family of musicians. He began his studies in the US and continued them at the Vienna Conservatory. His career has taken him from the genres of Baroque to Classical to 20th-century music, while firmly establishing himself as an expert within the Bel Canto repertoire, Rossini, and French Grand Opera.

Michael has worked with conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sir Andrew Davis, Sir Mark Elder, Valery Gergiev, Fabio Luisi, Alberto Zedda, Michele Mariotti, Emmanuelle Haïm, Christophe Rousset and Evelino Pidò.

He has sung at many of the world’s most prestigious opera houses, including Teatro alla Scala; Royal Opera, Covent Garden; Deutsche Oper Berlin; Chicago Lyric Opera; La Monnaie (Brussels); Bavarian State Opera; Théâtre des Champs Elysées; Opernhaus Zurich; and Gran Teatre del Liceu. His varied repertoire includes the title roles in Berlioz’s La damnation de Faust, Rossini’s Otello, Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann, and Mozart’s Mitridate, as well as Alfredo (Verdi's La traviata), Arnold (Rossini's Guillaume Tell), and Fernand (Donizetti's La favorite).
