Australian baritone Samuel Dale Johnson joined the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in September 2014. He sang Dormont in Rossini’s La scala di seta in Meet the Young Artists Week, and made his Royal Opera debut as Silvano in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera. This was followed by appearances as Imperial Commissioner (Madama Butterfly), Baron Duphol (La Traviata), Leuthold (William Tell), and as a soloist in The Royal Opera’s gala performance.

His repertoire includes Belcore (Donizetti L’elisir d’amore), Papageno (Mozart The Magic Flute), Wigmaker (Strauss Ariadne auf Naxos), Morales (Bizet Carmen), Silvio (Leoncavallo Pagliacci), Thésée (Enescu Oedipe), Albert (Massenet Werther), and Conte (Mozart The Marriage of Figaro). Whilst a student, he performed roles such as Count Almaviva; the title roles of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Handel’s Saul; Peter Quince (Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream); and Father (Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel).

Samuel graduated with a Masters of Music from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, where he was a recipient of the RJ Hamer Opera Scholarship with the Dame Nellie Melba Opera Trust. Awards he has received include First Place in the prestigious German Opera Award from the Australian Opera Foundation, the Dr Francesco Castellano Operatic Italian Award, and the Mostyn Hanger Award (Outstanding Performance in an Operatic Production).
