April 2018 Releases

Pavel Kolesnikov is the latest to partake of a fine and long-established Hyperion tradition: that of demonstrating the modern piano's eminent suitability as a medium for Baroque sensibilities. Music-making of precision, affect and intelligence is no less than one would expect from this marvellous pianist, all qualities to be found in abundance in Louis Couperin Dances from the Bauyn Manuscript; a perfect Record of the Month for April. Mozart Violin Sonatas K302, 380 & 526 sees Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien complete their celebrated (and award-winning) series. Little more needs to be added: both artists have established new standards in this repertoire, and these are set to be the reference recordings for many years to come.

The Complete four-part consort music by John Jenkins makes for a generous survey of this composer's mellifluous style of smooth melodic perfection. Light Divine is a new programme of Baroque music for treble and ensemble: the Norwegian MIN Ensemble is directed by Baroque trumpeter par excellence Mark Bennett and provides a welcome platform for the accomplished treble voice of Aksel Rykkvin.

King's College, Cambridge logo

The King's Cambridge label takes us on a pilgrimage through the liturgical year: a selection of Motets by William Byrd—quietly subversive in their Catholicism, shamelessly progressive in their musical style—elicits performances of committed skill from Stephen Cleobury and King's College Choir Cambridge.
