Owain Park is already no stranger to Hyperion through his regular appearances with Trinity College Choir Cambridge, but a fascinating release of English Motets spanning the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries from Dunstaple to Morley marks his directorial debut on the label with his all-male ensemble The Gesualdo Six. While Benjamin Appl's reputation as one of the finest voices of his generation can only be further enhanced with a seventh volume in our series of The Complete Brahms Songs. Graham Johnson presides.
A new label is launched this month: Colin Currie Records is a platform for the acclaimed percussionist's diverse projects and will feature key works from this ever-developing repertoire. And few works can have had a greater impact than Steve Reich's Drumming, here incisively recorded by the Colin Currie Group and Synergy Vocals.
The viols of Fretwork have been recording for Signum Classics once more. The Complete four-part consort music by John Jenkins makes for a generous survey of this composer's mellifluous style of smooth melodic perfection. Light Divine is a new programme of Baroque music for treble and ensemble: the Norwegian MIN Ensemble is directed by Baroque trumpeter par excellence Mark Bennett and provides a welcome platform for the accomplished treble voice of Aksel Rykkvin.
The King's Cambridge label takes us on a pilgrimage through the liturgical year: a selection of Motets by William Byrd—quietly subversive in their Catholicism, shamelessly progressive in their musical style—elicits performances of committed skill from Stephen Cleobury and King's College Choir Cambridge.
Finally, on Signum, Welsh master of Classical pianism Llŷr Williams presents Beethoven Unbound, a monumental fourteen-hour set encompassing the thirty-two sonatas, major sets of variations and some incidental works, all recorded live at thrilling Wigmore Hall recitals.
