The Cardinall's Musick and Andrew Carwood have recorded a second volume in their Tallis Edition (the first, Gaude gloriosa, won a Gramophone Award in 2006). Tallis' Salve intemerata virgo is a work of grand stature, its Mass an unabashed masterpiece, and all the more so in these performances. Chloë Hanslip is joined by Igor Tchetuev (making his Hyperion debut) in a recital of Medtner Violin Sonatas, works the composer considered to be among his most significant and which blossom in the hands of such masterful players.
Two contrasting choral re-issues this month: the rollicking Langlais Messe solennelle from Westminster Cathedral Choir, and The Binchois Consort's haunting Dufay Missa Puisque je vis.
