On 9 April 1862 Berwald finally saw his opera Estrella de Soria performed at the Royal Opera. It was quite well received and played five times before disappearing without trace from the repertoire. The brief introduction to this tragic overture gives a foretaste of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet but there is no official concert version and the overture runs directly into the first scene. Several proposals have been written for a loud concert ending but I have opted for one which concludes with the reflective music from the end of the whole opera: the love-stricken Estrella, Countess of Soria, stabs herself as her lover Salvaterra sails away with her rival, the beautiful Moorish princess Zulma.

Le 9 avril 1862, Berwald vit finalement son opéra Estrella de Soria interprété au Royal Opera. Tout à fait bien reçu, il fut joué cinq fois avant de disparaître du répertoire, sans laisser de traces. La brève introduction à cette ouverture tragique donne un avant-goût du Roméo et Juliette de Tchaïkovski, mais il n’existe pas de version de concert officielle et l’ouverture débouche directement sur la première scène. Plusieurs propositions ont été écrites pour une fin de concert puissante mais j’ai choisi de conclure avec la musique réfléchie de la fin de l’opéra tout entier: frappée d’amour, Estrella, la comtesse de Soria, se poignarde lorsque son amant Salvaterra fait voile avec sa rivale Zulma, la magnifique princesse maure.

Am 9. April 1862 sah Berwald schließlich seine Oper Estrella de Soria in der Königlichen Oper aufgeführt. Das Werk wurde recht gut empfangen und fünfmal gespielt, bevor es spurlos aus dem Repertoire verschwand. Die kurze Einführung dieser tragischen Ouvertüre gibt einen Vorgeschmack auf Tschaikowskis Romeo und Julia, es existiert jedoch keine offizielle Konzertversion, und die Ouvertüre beginnt unmittelbar mit dein ersten Akt. Es sind zahlreiche Vorschläge für ein lautes Konzert-Finale verfaßt worden, ich habe mich jedoch für eine Version, die mit der nachdenklichen Musik am Ende der gesamten Oper abschließt, entschieden: Die verliebte Estrella, Gräfin von Soria, ersticht sich, als ihr geliebter Salvaterra mit ihrer Rivalin, der schönen maurischen Prinzessin Zulma, davonsegelt.
