The Missa Aeterna Christi munera has been a favourite of church choirs for good reasons: its classic simplicity, its brevity, its clear singability and its four voice parts (only the second Agnus Dei divides the tenors). It is based on three melodic strands taken from the tune which gives the Mass its title, the hymn for Matins of Apostles and Evangelists; the fourth line of the verses has a repeat of the first line’s melody. Palestrina employs these themes in turn in the opening Kyrie– Christe–Kyrie sections, passing them from voice to voice, transforming and elaborating them. He uses them in the wordy Gloria and Credo in a less complicated way, alluding to them mainly in the top voice. In the later movements, Palestrina gently plays his variations in the most serene way, until, finally, in his second Agnus Dei, he produces a passage of great tranquillity as he groups the voices in parallel at ‘dona nobis pacem’, a moment that has captivated generations of singers.

La Missa Aeterna Christi munera a maintes raisons d’être l’une des favorites des chorales d’églises: sa simplicité classique, sa brièveté, sa précision qui la rend éminemment chantable et ses quatre parties de voix (seul le second Agnus Dei divise les ténors). Elle est basée sur trois enchaînements mélodiques pris à l’air qui donne son nom à la messe, l’hymne pour Matines des Apôtres et Evangélistes; la quatrième ligne des versets a une répétition de la première ligne de la mélodie. Palestrina utilise ces thèmes tour à tour dans les sections d’introduction Kyrie–Christe–Kyrie, les passant de voix à voix, les transformant et les élaborant. Il les utilise dans le verbeux Gloria et dans le Credo d’une manière moins compliquée, y faisant allusion surtout dans la voix supérieure. Dans les mouvements suivants, Palestrina joue avec douceur ses variations de la façon la plus sereine, jusqu’à ce que, dans son second Agnus Dei, il produise un passage d’immense tranquillité en groupant à «dona nobis pacem» les voix en parallèle, moment qui a captivé des générations de chanteurs.

Die Missa Aeterna Christi munera war aus gutem Grund schon immer bei Kirchenchören beliebt, sei es wegen ihrer klassischen Schlichtheit oder ihrer Prägnanz, ihrer klaren Singbarkeit und ihrer Vierstimmigkeit (nur im zweiten Agnus Dei sind die Tenöre unterteilt). Sie baut auf drei melodischen Strängen des liturgischen Gesangs auf, dem die Messe ihren Titel verdankt—der Hymne zur Frühmette an den Festtagen der Apostel und Evangelisten; in der vierten Zeile jeder Strophe wird die Melodie der ersten Zeile wiederholt. Palestrina wendet seine Themen in der Eröffhungsfolge Kyrie–Christe–Kyrie nacheinander an, gibt sie von einer Stimme zur nächsten weiter, verwandelt sie und schmückt sie aus. Er setzt sie im wortreichen Gloria und Credo auf weniger komplizierte Weise ein, indem er sie vornehmlich in der obersten Stimme andeutet. In den späteren Sätzen führt Palestrina spielerisch sacht und mit äußerster Gelassenheit seine Variationen aus, bis er schließlich im zweiten Agnus Dei eine überaus friedfertige Passage hervorbringt, zu der er die Stimmen auf „dona nobis pacem“ parallel anordnet. Dieser Moment hat schon ganze Generationen von Sängern bestrickt.
