Trio Sonata in G major, BWV530

composer
circa 1727

The G major sonata is a veritable concerto in its first movement: themes and ‘style’ are so Italianate that some scholars even speak of a ‘Vivaldi database’ for this work. The Lento has the quality of a sonata for two flutes and bass in Bach ‘s typical plaintive style, and the fugal finale is Bach at his most gloriously complex.

from notes by Peter Williams © 1990
