Vater unser im Himmelreich, BWV737

Neumeister manuscript

This setting is written as an allabreve, denoting slow-moving dense counterpoint throughout, with the chorale melody heard at the top of the texture. BWV737 survives in two copies, one by Walther, the other in Yale under the alternative title ‘Nimm von uns, Herr, du treuer Gott’. The affect of the setting is sombre, the harmony often unyielding yet beautiful, and the compass of the organ low; yet the chorale soars over the top.
