Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gemein, BWV734

1708/17; Weimar; doubtful attribution

This is a ‘manualiter’ (manuals only) setting. The chorale is heard clearly, migrating between the voices—soprano; alto; bass; alto; bass; soprano. As in BWV713, there is a change of metre for the second half of the chorale, with the melody more integrated into the counterpoints. Williams sees the second line of the text reflected in the affect of the prelude: ‘und lasst uns fröhlich springen’ (‘and let us leap for joy’) (Williams 2003 p478).
