Meine Seele erhebt den Herrn 'Magnificat', BWV733

1708/17; Weimar

This is a setting of the chorale melody set to the words of the Magnificat from Luke chapter 1, a melody also known as the tonus peregrinus. BWV733 is a fugue in duple-time, played mostly in the manuals, though culminating powerfully with the pedals giving a full rendition of the melody. This striking structure—mostly manuals, but with pedals entering at the end for greater effect—is often associated with Pachelbel. The gravitas of these pedal entries are intensified by the other factors that crown the setting: a five part texture, with an extra tenor part emerging with the pedal; some magnificent stretti in the densely worked counterpoint of the inner parts; and a fine long pedal point below the final chromatic harmony.
