Fughetta super Wir glauben all an einen Gott, BWV681

1739; Clavier-Übung iii, Leipzig

The smaller manualiter setting is written, again as a fughetta, in a French style. It is richly ornamented, and punctuated with striking diminished seventh chords. Williams points out the structural importance of BWV681, coming exactly in the middle of the Clavierübung III, though it is also the shortest piece, perhaps ‘reflecting a kind of inverse emphasis’ (Williams 2003 p.414).
