Abendbilder is a distinct curiosity, in which Wolf strings together three separate odes of Lenau as a continuous narrative, evoking the atmosphere of a Classical landscape. If it has a precedent, it is in some of the longer and more episodic songs of Schubert, or in the more illustrative sections of Haydn’s Creation and The Seasons. For Wolf, the music may seem unexpectedly ingenuous, but this is in keeping with the pietistic mood of the text. Simple in harmony, with most of the interest centred on the piano part, it conjures up in turn a dramatic moonrise, a sequence of rather comically chromatic sheepbells, the eventual setting of the sun, and—particularly charmingly—the peaceful grazing of cattle (at ‘Schon verstummt die Matte’). All of this is clearly orchestral in inspiration: there is even a suggestion of Wagnerian high strings à la Lohengrin just before the herdsman’s prayer brings the somewhat rambling structure to a satisfying close by reprising the music of the opening section.
Abendbilder was composed during the two months before Wolf’s seventeenth birthday in March 1877.

Abendbilder est une véritable curiosité, dans laquelle Wolf enchaîne trois odes distinctes de Lenau pour en faire un récit continu, évoquant l’atmosphère d’un paysage classique. S’il a un précédent, c’est parmi les lieder les plus longs et comprenant le plus d’épisodes de Schubert, ou parmi les sections les plus illustratives de La Création ou des Saisons de Haydn. Pour une œuvre de Wolf, la musique peut sembler étonnamment ingénue, mais ceci est en accord avec le climat piétiste du texte. Simple du point de vue harmonique, l’intérêt se concentrant essentiellement sur la partie pianistique, il évoque tour à tour un lever de lune spectaculaire, une succession de sonnailles assez comiquement chromatiques, le soleil qui finit par se coucher et—de façon particulièrement charmante—les troupeaux paissant paisiblement (sur «Schon verstummt die Matte»). Tout cela est manifestement d’inspiration orchestrale; on a même une suggestion de cordes aiguës wagnériennes à la Lohengrin juste avant que la prière du berger n’apporte à cette structure quelque peu divagatrice une conclusion satisfaisante en reprenant la musique de la section initiale.
Abendbilder a été composé au cours des deux mois précédant le dix-septième anniversaire de Wolf, en mars 1877.

Abendbilder hat eine gewisse Kuriosität: Wolf reiht drei verschiedene Oden Lenaus aneinander und formt so eine kontinuierliche Erzählung, die die Atmosphäre einer klassischen Landschaft evoziert. Wenn dieses Lied Vorgänger hat, so sind diese in einigen der längeren und episodischeren Liedern Schuberts zu finden, oder auch in den illustrativen Passagen von Haydns Schöpfung und Die Jahreszeiten. Für Wolf mag diese Musik unerwartet unbefangen scheinen, jedoch ist dies im Einklang mit der pietistischen Stimmung des Texts. Die Harmonien sind schlicht gehalten und die größte Aufmerksamkeit gilt dem Klavier. Ein dramatischer Mondaufgang wird heraufbeschworen, dann kommt eine chromatische Schafglockensequenz, die nicht einer gewissen Komik entbehrt, gefolgt von dem Sonnenuntergang und, besonders reizvoll, dem friedlichen Weiden der Kühe (bei „Schon verstummt die Matte“). All dies hat einen deutlichen orchestralen Anstrich: Wolf spielt sogar auf die hohen Streicher Wagners à la Lohengrin an, und zwar kurz bevor das Gebet des Hirten die etwas unzusammenhängende Struktur zu einem befriedigenden Ende bringt, indem die Musik der Anfangspassage wiederholt wird.
Abendbilder entstand in den zwei Monaten vor Wolfs 17. Geburtstag im März 1877.
