Additional Advent Antiphon (France, 18th century)

O Wisdom of God is a series of seven Advent antiphons (known as the ‘O’ antiphons) which look forward to the birth of the Christ child as Redeemer and Saviour. To these are added an eighth and final antiphon. Like Seven Letters, this tableau makes use of recitative, although in this case the recitative is entirely choral rather than a melodic line with simple accompaniment. In keeping with the expectation of the text, the breathless repetition of the refrain ‘Come, Lord Jesu’ becomes more insistent as the piece progresses.
