Toccata 'Von Himmel hoch'

on the tune by Martin Luther (1483-1546)

The Toccata ‘Vom Himmel hoch’ by the American organist-composer Garth Edmundson, a pupil of Bonnet, is like a vast and ostentatious stained-glass window. The continuous figuration of the first three verses becomes, in the last, punctuation for the lines of the chorale, in the manner of Bach’s In dulci jubilo.
