For forty years, from the age of twenty-nine until shortly before his death, W T Best presided at the organ of St George’s Hall, Liverpool, and he was probably the first British organist to achieve real fame on the concert platform. During his time he was accused both of being too classical and of pandering to the taste of his Saturday night audience by playing transcriptions. Like Lemare he published hundreds of arrangements of works from the orchestral repertoire. The Hungarian March was written in 1809 by János Bihari, in honour of Francis Rákóczi, leader of the Hungarian uprising of 1703 to 1711. In 1838 Liszt included it in his recital programmes and Berlioz incorporated his own famous version of it into The Damnation of Faust. Although credited by the publisher Schott as being an arrangement of this version, Best’s piece should be seen as a distillation of the spirit rather than the letter of the French master.

Vierzig Jahre lang, zwischen seinem 29. Lebensjahr bis kurz vor seinem Tode, spielte W. T.
