The intention of the alternative texts provided for five of the songs in Liszt’s Zwölf Lieder [aus] Winterreise may be compared with the principles he employed in the double texts of the Schwanengesang transcriptions, except that here Liszt did not feel the need to offer multiple solutions in all twelve cases. In Die Nebensonnen the recitative in the second verse is rearranged so that the tremolos are pitched above the melody rather than below; in Mut one or two thornier difficulties are smoothed over, and the newly-shaped ending for a contracted keyboard is a happily found idea. The differences in Der Lindenbaum are confined to the last verse where the long trill amidst the right-hand chords is dropped in favour of re-shaping the melody in broad arpeggiated chords.

In the last verse of Das Wirtshaus, tremolos give way to simpler triplets and produce a markedly desolate effect; and in Der stürmische Morgen Liszt’s leaner alternative text in proud bare octaves is somewhat closer to Schubert’s original. Im Dorfe remains unaltered, but since it is framed by two statements of Der stürmische Morgen, as before, it needs must be repeated here.

L’objectif des textes alternatifs fournis pour cinq des chants dans les Zwölf Lieder [aus| Winterreise peut être comparé aux principes qu’il employa dans les doubles textes des transcriptions de Schwanengesang, à part qu’ici, Liszt n’a pas ressenti le besoin d’offrir des solutions multiples dans chacun des douze cas. Dans Die Nebensonnen, le récitatif du deuxième couplet est réarrangé de telle façon que la hauteur du son des trémolos soit placée au-dessus de la mélodie plutôt qu’en dessous; dans Mut, une ou deux difficultés plus épineuses sont aplanies, et la fin nouvellement formée pour clavier contracté constitue une idée bien trouvée. Les différences dans Der Lindenbaum se limitent au dernier couplet, où la longue trille, au milieu des accords de la main droite, est abandonnée en faveur d’une restructuration de la mélodie en larges accords arpégés.

Dans le dernier couplet de Das Wirtshaus, les trémolos cèdent la place à des triolets plus simples et produisent, de façon marquée, un effet désolé; et dans Der stürmische Morgen, le texte alternatif plus maigre, composé de superbes octaves simples, est, d’une certaine manière, plus proche de l’original de Schubert. Liszts Absicht bei der Erstellung von alternativen Texten für fünf seiner Zwölf Lieder [aus] Winterreise läßt sich mit den Prinzipien vergleichen, die er in den doppelten Texten des Schwanengesangs anwandte, wenn Liszt es hier auch nicht für notwendig erachtete, in allen zwölf Fällen vielfache Lösungen anzubieten. In den Nebensonnen ist der Rezitativ in der zweiten Strophe nun so eingerichtet, daß die Tremoli höher als die Melodie liegen und nicht unter ihr; in Mut wurden ein oder zwei bösartigere Schwierigkeiten geglättet, und die Idee eins neugeformten Schlusses für eine kürzere Tastatur darf als glücklich bezeichnet werden. Die Abwandlungen im Lindenbaum beschränken sich auf die letzte Strophe, in welcher der lange, inmitten von Akkorden in der rechten Hand gespielte Triller fallengelassen wird und die Melodie stattdessen die Form breit arpeggierter Akkorde trägt.

In der letzten Strophe vom Wirtshaus weichen Tremoli den einfacheren Triolen, was einen bemerkenswert trostlosen Effekt erzeugt; und in Der stürmische Morgen ähnelt Liszts knappere alternative Lesart in stolzen schmucklosen Oktaven Schuberts Original mehr. Im Dorfe bleibt unverändert, aber da es, wie zuvor, von zwei Vorträgen des Der stürmischen Morgens eingerahmt wird, muß es auch hier wiederholt werden.
