Shortly after his return from Paris and Mannheim, in both of which cities he had frustratingly failed to win a position at court, Mozart produced one of his most famous Masses. Grumpy he may well have been about having to return to Salzburg, a city that he considered to be hopelessly provincial, but musically he was quickly back on his best form, writing the ‘Coronation’ Mass, K317. Mozart was rather proud of this work, for whilst he was trying to impress future new possible employers he twice later requested that his father send a copy to him. Mozart did not title K317 ‘Coronation’ himself: that label was only attached some ten years later when Salieri performed the work for the coronation of Emperor Leopold II as King of Bohemia. Mozart also lent the score and parts to his friend Anton Stoll (for whom he wrote the motet Ave verum corpus) for performance at Baden, near Vienna. The work is largely optimistic in conception, but for the Agnus Dei Mozart produced another of his jewels. Remarkably similar to the Countess’s ‘Dove sono’ in Le nozze di Figaro, the accompaniment is gloriously simple, with one and sometimes two oboes set over pizzicato strings, the solo soprano floating a melody that is surely as near perfection as any he ever wrote.

Peu après être rentré de Paris et de Mannheim, deux cités où il avait connu la frustration de n’avoir pu conquérir un poste à la cour, Mozart produisit l’une de ses plus fameuses messes. Pour bougon qu’il ait pu être à l’idée de rentrer à Salzbourg, une ville qu’il considérait comme désespérément provinciale, il retrouva bien vite sa meilleure forme musicale en composant la Messe, K317, une pièce dont il était d’ailleurs assez fier puisqu’il demanda par deux fois à son père de lui en adresser une copie pour impressionner d’éventuels futurs employeurs. Le «Couronnement» du titre de K317 n’est pas de Mozart: cette épithète ne fut accolée à l’œuvre que dix ans plus tard, quand Salieri la joua pour le couronnement de l’empereur Leopold II, devenu roi de Bohême. Mozart prêta aussi la partition et les parties de cette messe à son ami Anton Stoll (pour qui il écrivit le motet Ave verum corpus), pour qu’elle fût jouée à Baden, près de Vienne. L’ensemble est d’une conception largement optimiste, mais pour l’Agnus Dei, Mozart produisit un autre de ses joyaux. Remarquablement similaire au «Dove sono» de la Comtesse dans Le nozze di Figaro, il affiche un accompagnement glorieusement simple, avec un voire deux hautbois disposés contre des cordes en pizzicato, le soprano solo faisant flotter une mélodie assurément plus proche de la perfection que tout ce que Mozart écrivit jamais.

Kurz nach seiner Rückkehr aus Paris und Mannheim—in keiner der beiden Städte war es ihm gelungen, eine Stellung am Hof zu gewinnen—komponierte Mozart eine seiner berühmtesten Messen. Er mag wohl frustriert darüber gewesen sein, dass er nach Salzburg zurückkehren musste, eine Stadt, die er für hoffnungslos provinziell hielt, doch musikalisch war er schnell wieder auf Höchstform und komponierte die Messe KV317. Mozart war auf dieses Werk sichtlich stolz: zweimal sollte er später seinen Vater darum bitten, ihm die Partitur zuzuschicken, damit er entsprechenden Eindruck damit bei potenziellen zukünftigen Arbeitgebern machen könne. Der Titel „Krönungsmesse“ für KV317 stammt nicht von Mozart selbst sondern ergab sich etwa zehn Jahre später, als Salieri das Werk anlässlich der Krönung Kaiser Leopolds II. zum König von Böhmen zur Aufführung brachte. Mozart stellte auch seinem Freund Anton Stoll (für den er die Motette Ave verum corpus komponiert hatte) die Partitur und das Orchestermaterial für eine Aufführung in Baden bei Wien zur Verfügung. Das Werk ist in der Anlage recht optimistisch, doch gehört das Agnus Dei zu seinen besondern Juwelen. Es hat eine auffallende Ähnlichkeit mit dem „Dove sono“ der Gräfin aus Le nozze di Figaro; die Begleitung ist schlicht gehalten, zuweilen erklingen eine oder zwei Oboen über dem Pizzicato der Streicher und der Solosopran schwebt darüber mit einer der vollkommensten Melodien Mozarts überhaupt.
