Meine Seele erhebt den Herrn, BWV648

circa 1748/9; Schübler Chorale No 4; arrangement of Cantata 10 movement 5
August 1931; commissioned by Harriet Cohen and first published by Oxford University Press in A Bach Book for Harriet Cohen; first performed at the Queen's Hall on 17 October 1932

John Ireland chose to refashion Meine Seele erhebt den Herrn BWV648 from the ‘Schübler’ chorales; his manuscript is dated August 1931. His one-page setting underlines the fugal tendencies and questing chromaticism of Bach’s original, beginning in and finally retreating into the bass.
