What divinity touches my soul,
what new passion is inflamed in my heart,
who are the beauties who by delighting me
with such a lovely subject have enslaved me?
What divinity come down from the heavens above
has come to delight my spirits and blur my vision,
what suns inflamed with clarity and passion
are kindling a furnace in my heart with their rays?
My goddess it is you, and your fine soul
is a divine ray from the celestial flame
which makes me adore beneath the great deity
your solemn gentleness and gentle solemnity.
My lady it is to you that I dedicate myself
because your delicate and polished hand
which touched me so tenderly
is that same snare by which I am caught.
The rays from your eyes were the only cause
for my being caught in love and I don’t dare
to declare it openly for fear that someone
should be jealous or importunate of my good fortune.
Your eyes are two suns which make another,
whose beauty surpasses that of all the stars, blush.
By night it is they that light my way,
and in the depths of winter they make me feel it is summer.
I see now that love orders me
to obey its laws, and that I must render up
my treasured liberty to the one who holds me
enslaved by the laws of the bond of love.
