Berceuse, dated 1900, was in fact adapted about 1903 from a setting of the German text Wiegenlied, famous as ‘Brahms’s Lullaby’. A rapt meditation, its tonal shading might be felt too fine and sensitive for a conventional lullaby.

Bien que datée de 1900, Berceuse fut, en réalité, adaptée (vers 1903) d’une mise en musique du Wiegenlied allemand, la fameuse «Berceuse de Brahms». La nuance tonale de cette méditation absorbée peut paraître par trop belle et sensible pour une berceuse conventionnelle.

Das mit 1900 datierte Lied Berceuse entstand eigentlich erst um 1903. Hier wird der deutsche Text Wiegenlied vertont, der in Brahms’ Fassung allgemein bekannt ist. Ives’ Lied ist eine hingerissene Meditation, womöglich sind aber die harmonischen Schattierungen für ein konventionelles Wiegenlied zu clever und raffiniert.
