An old carol

First line:
I sing of a maiden
author of text

Roger Quilter’s songs proved so popular in the opening decades of the last century that he was rarely moved to write in any other genre. An old carol, his setting of an early fifteenth-century devotional lyric, dates from 1923, and was first published in his Six Songs, Op 25. The piece captures the mystery of Christ’s incarnation in music of great tenderness and intimate expression.
