This cradle song comes from Ane Compendious Buik of Godly and Spirituall Songis (1567) by the Dundee brothers, James, John and Robert Wedderburn. ‘Ane song of the birth of Christ, with the tune of Baw lula low [Balulalow]’ is a verse translation of Luther’s Vom Himmel hoch. The composer and teacher Alan Bullard has chosen to include the final stanza in his setting, which begins as a conventional doxology but then focuses on God’s New Year gift. He writes: ‘This flowing setting of the traditional sixteenth-century text gently pictures Mary rocking Jesus, a Christmas gift for humankind.’
