Ecce advenit

1607 Gradualia
author of text
Introit at Mass on the Feast of the Epiphany

Like Puer natus est nobis, Byrd’s setting of the Introit for Mass on the Feast of the Epiphany comes from the 1607 Gradualia. As well as adding brilliance to the texture, the two equal upper voices highlight significant elements of the text through repetition, as at ‘Ecce’, ‘et potestas’, and ‘et imperium’. As is customary in the Gradualia the individual phrases of the Gloria are clearly delineated, while the ‘et in saecula’ is given particularly extended treatment.
