Away in a manger – Cradle song

First line:
Away in a manger
author of text
Philadelphia 1883

The authorship of these words is in some doubt, but it is certain that the familiar tune published in 1895 is by William J Kirkpatrick (1838–1921), whose family had emigrated from County Tyrone to Philadelphia. David Briggs’s setting draws on his eclectic experience as an international organ recitalist: ‘I wrote my arrangement of Away in a manger in 2006 as a gift celebrating my three daughters (Kerensa, Eloise and Miriam) and two nieces (Ellie and Rachel). It was first performed at my old parish church, St Mary’s, Moseley, a suburb of Birmingham. I wrapped the original melody up in a post-impressionist harmonic language, saturated in garlic and one or two other exotic, succulent herbs!’
