Watts' cradle song

First line:
Hush! my dear, lie still and slumber
author of text

The great nonconformist theologian, hymn-writer and minister Isaac Watts (1674–1748) left over 750 hymns. A cradle hymn is addressed to a new-born baby lying safe and warm, whose surroundings are contrasted with our Lord’s bed of coarse hay, and the company of farm animals. The New Zealand composer and conductor Richard Madden has chosen four of Watts’s original fourteen verses for his gently modal contemporary setting, published in 2013.
