Cantique de Noël

First line:
Minuet, Chrétiens
composer
1848
author of text
credited to Mary Cappeau de Roquemaure in the 1848 edition

Adolphe Adam was a prolific composer of operas and ballets (of which Giselle has remained well known). The Cantique de Noël, to a text by the wine merchant and poet Placide Cappeau, was first performed in 1847 to celebrate the renovation of the church organ at Roquemaure, near Avignon. The text poetically reflects on the birth of Jesus, as announced to the shepherds by the angel, and the redemption of sinful mankind.
