In all the carols I have written I have taken pains to remind congregations that the Christ child was born to redeem humanity, and that he was destined to die, as prophesied. The final chord in the refrain of Telling has no verbal equivalent—its mystery, ambiguity and even irrationality are peculiar to Music. Is the reminder in an ‘admonitory tone’?! Must carols be fluffy and sentimental?!
