O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst, S298 Second version

composer
1843/50; LW N18; published as Liebesträume No 3 in 1850
author of text

The longest of the set of three ‘dreams of love’ is also the most famous: O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst, to words by Ferdinand Freiligrath, a political poet and ardent liberal. This song, too, mixes Eros and Death: a male speaker entreats his beloved (and by extension, all women) to love deeply and truly because one day their beloved will die.
