Freudvoll und leidvoll, S280 Second setting

composer
1848; LW N23
author of text
1788; Clärchens Lied from Act 3 of Egmont

The second setting, published in 1848, is very different: the introduction is all turbulent passion, a tumult of chords that dies down before the singer enters. Again, enharmonic shifts are on display: ‘die Seele, die liebt’ near the end has the singer sustaining a high G sharp while the harmony beneath him changes to A flat major.
