The Cantica Beatae Mariae Virginis, quaternis et quinis vocibus, is a collection of settings of the Magnificat (or Canticle of Mary), which comes at the heart of the daily Office of Vespers. As was common practice for the era, verses intoned to the plainchant psalm tone alternate with verses of polyphony; each of the eight psalm tones is given a four-voice and a five-voice setting. The Magnificat secundi toni on this recording is an alternatim setting with the even verses set to plainchant and the odd verses in four-part polyphony—with the exception of the verse beginning ‘Et misericordia’, where the texture reduces to three voices, as was tradition. Cardoso also uses the second tone as the basis for his polyphonic invention, setting the chant melody as a long-note cantus firmus in the upper two voices, a structural foundation to be elaborated upon by the lower parts.

Le Cantica Beatae Mariae Virginis, quaternis et quinis vocibus est un recueil de Magnificat (ou Cantique de Marie), la pièce au cœur de l’office quotidien des Vêpres. Comme c’était courant à cette époque, les versets entonnés sur le ton psalmodique du plain-chant alternent avec des versets de polyphonie; chacun des huit tons psalmodiques se voit confier une musique à quatre voix et à cinq voix. Dans cet enregistrement, le Magnificat secundi toni est une mise en musique alternatim avec les versets pairs en plain-chant et les versets impairs en polyphonie à quatre voix, à l’exception du verset commençant par «Et misericordia», où la texture passe à trois voix, comme c’était la tradition. Cardoso utilise aussi le deuxième ton comme base de son invention polyphonique, mettant en musique la mélodie du chant comme un cantus firmus en longues aux deux voix supérieures, un fondement structurel sur lequel les parties inférieures s’étendent.

Damals war es üblich, dass Verse im einstimmigen Psalmton mit polyphonen Versen alternierten; zu jedem der acht Psalmtöne gibt es einen vier- und einen fünfstimmigen Chorsatz. Im hier aufgenommenen Magnificat secundi toni erklingen alternatim die geradzahligen Verse einstimmig, die ungeradzahligen im vierstimmigen polyphonen Satz; eine Ausnahme ist der Vers „Et misericordia“, der traditionell dreistimmig gehalten wurde. Cardoso benutzt den zweiten Psalmton auch als Grundlage seines polyphonen Satzes: Der Cantus firmus erklingt in langen Noten in den beiden Oberstimmen; auf dieser Grundlage werden die Unterstimmen entwickelt.

A extraordinária notoriedade de Manuel Cardoso ficou indelevelmente plasmada nos cinco volumes de obras sacras que editou em Lisboa, entre 1613 e 1648. O Magnificat secundi toni, aqui apresentado em alternatim com os versos ímpares a quatro vozes (exceptuando a habitual redução para três vozes do quinto verso, “Et misericordia”) e os pares em cantochão, pertence ao primeiro daqueles volumes, Cantica Beatae Mariae Virginis, quaternis et quinis vocibus. Aqui, Cardoso engendra versões polifónicas do Cântico de Maria—a partir do Evangelho segundo São Lucas e parte integrante do ofício de Vésperas—em todos os tons salmódicos. Na presente versão, a melodia do segundo tom é bem evidente, estruturando a textura polifónica com notas longas, mormente nas duas vozes superiores, durante toda a obra.
