Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her, BWV700

composer

In BWV700, the chorale melody is treated fugally, the feel austere and solid, with the chorale given in slow, even notes. This is a wonderful setting with a through-composed structure: each section of the fugue is based on consecutive phrases of the chorale: four phrases, four sections. Each section treats the phrases on the manuals, but culminates with the phrase given in the pedals. The affect is one of gravitas.
