O holy night

author of text
translator of text

Placide Clappeau was a wine merchant and mayor of the French town of Roquemaure who penned poems for his own enjoyment. In 1847 he wrote O holy night, derived from the text in Luke’s Gospel describing how shepherds were approached by an angel telling them of the birth of Jesus. The Parisian musician Adolphe Adam added music to the poem soon after, with the Boston cleric John Sullivan Dwight quickly making an English translation of the words and securing O holy night as one of the most beloved of Christmas carols.
