The First Nowell

The First Nowell is often misspelled as ‘The First Noel’, despite its never having had any French associations. In truth this is one of the oldest of English Christmas carols, possibly dating back as far as the thirteenth century, although the first printed version of the tune and lyrics did not appear until 1833 in the publication Christmas carols, ancient and modern. The present arrangement is by the American classical composer Morton Gould.
