Accepit Jesus panem

composer
6vv; published by Antonio Gardano in Novi Thesauri Musici, 1568
author of text
1 Corinthians 11: 23-24

The motet Accepit Jesus panem is in a very largely imitative and melismatic style. Towards the end, however, groups of voices rhythmically enunciate together the start of ‘in meam commemorationem’ (‘in remembrance of me’). The text is for the Feast of Corpus Christi, and uses words spoken by Jesus at the Last Supper. Guyot’s treatment deftly highlights the centrality of that remembrance to the feast day, and indeed to the Mass.
