Bach never came up with anything more pageant-like and eastern in atmosphere than the opening chorus of BWV65 Sie werden aus Saba alle kommen composed in 1724. He uses the high horns to convey majesty and antiquity, the recorders to represent the high pitches often associated with oriental music and the oboes da caccia (in tenor register) to evoke the shawm-like double-reed instruments (salamiya and zurna) of the Near East. The opening ritornello shows off the burnished sheen of his orchestra to perfection and concludes with a final unison statement of the theme spread over five octaves. Even before the voices enter in canonic order Bach parades before our eyes the stately procession of the three magi and the ‘multitude of camels’ (mentioned in the omitted verse from Isaiah) laden with gifts. This imposing chorale fantasia concludes with a restatement of the octave unison theme, this time by all the voices and instruments as the caravan comes to a halt in front of the manger. Now there is a sudden shift in scale and mood, from the outward pomp of the royal procession to the intimacy of the simple stable and to the oblations offered to the child in the crib, as the choir intone the sober German version of the Latin ‘Puer natus in Bethlehem’, traditionally sung in Leipzig at this feast. There follows a secco recitative exemplary in its word setting, its arching melodies and rich chromatic harmonies, culminating in an affecting arioso. This leads in turn to an aria for bass (No 4) in which the two oboes da caccia engage in a triple canon with the continuo, evidently to portray the gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. A second recitative follows, this time for tenor: in exchange for ‘my heart that I humbly bring Thee … give Thyself to me as well’. To depict ‘the most abundant wealth’ that the Christian will inherit, Bach opts for the most opulent scoring in the entrancing triple-rhythm tenor aria (No 6). Pairs of recorders, violins, horns, and oboes da caccia operate independently and in consort, exchanging one-bar riffs in kaleidoscopic varieties of timbre. To English ears the main melody has more than a passing similarity to the nursery rhyme ‘Lavender’s blue’, while the fervent concluding chorale (verse 10 of Paul Gerhardt’s ‘Ich hab in Gottes Herz und Sinn’), set to a secular French sixteenth-century melody, is familiar as the hymn ‘O God, our help in ages past’.

Jamais Bach n’offrit musique plus évocatrice de temps anciens et d’un climat plus oriental qu’avec le chœur d’introduction de la Cantate Sie werden aus Saba alle kommen («Ils viendront tous de Saba»), BWV65, composée en 1724. Il utilise le haut de la tessiture des cors pour suggérer un caractère majestueux et antique, les flûtes à bec pour illustrer les sonorités aiguës souvent associées à la musique orientale et les hautbois da caccia (dans leur registre de ténor) pour restituer les instruments à anche double du Proche-Orient apparentés au chalumeau (salamiya et zurna). Le ritornello initial met en valeur de façon optimale l’éclat chatoyant de son orchestre, avec pour finir un énoncé à l’unisson du thème réparti sur cinq octaves. Avant même que les voix n’entrent en ordre canonique, Bach fait défiler sous nos yeux la majestueuse procession des trois Rois mages et la «multitude des chameaux» (mentionnée dans la strophe omise d’Isaïe) chargés de présents. Cette imposante fantaisie de choral se referme sur une reprise du thème à l’octave et à l’unisson, cette fois par toutes les voix et tous les instruments tandis que la caravane s’immobilise devant la crèche. Se produit alors un changement complet d’ampleur et d’atmosphère, de la pompe extérieure de la procession royale à l’intimité de la modeste étable et aux offrandes faites à l’enfant dans son berceau, cependant que le chœur entonne la sobre version allemande du «Puer natus est in Bethlehem» latin (1545), traditionnellement chantée à Leipzig pour cette fête. S’ensuit un récitatif secco, exemplaire par sa prosodie, sa mélodie en arche et ses riches harmonies chromatiques, culminant dans un émouvant arioso. Lequel conduit à son tour à un air de basse (nº 4) où les deux hautbois da caccia engagent un triple canon avec le continuo, de toute évidence censé représenter les triples présents: l’or, l’encens et la myrrhe. Un second récitatif fait suite, cette fois pour ténor: en échange de «mon cœur que je t’apporte humblement […] donne-toi toi-même aussi à moi». Pour décrire «la plus grande abondance de richesses» dont le chrétien héritera, Bach opte pour l’instrumentation la plus opulente qui soit dans le merveilleux air de ténor sur rythme ternaire (nº 6). Flûtes à bec, violons, cors et hautbois da caccia par paires s’exécutent à la fois indépendamment et en consort, s’échangeant des micromotifs d’une mesure en une diversité kaléidoscopique de timbres. Pour des oreilles anglaises, la mélodie principale présente plus qu’une vague ressemblance avec la comptine «Lavender’s blue», tandis que le fervent choral de conclusion (10ème strophe de l’hymne de Paul Gerhardt «Ich hab in Gottes Herz und Sinn», 1647), sur une mélodie française profane du XVIe siècle, nous est familière—il s’agit de l’hymne «O God, our help in ages past».

In keinem der Werke Bachs ist die Atmosphäre festlicher und östlicher als im Eingangschor der 1724 komponierten Kantate BWV65 Sie werden aus Saba alle kommen. Er verwendet die hohen Hörner, um einen Eindruck von Majestät und Altertum zu ver mitteln, die Blockflöten, um die hohen Töne wieder zugeben, die häufig mit orientalischer Musik assoziiert werden, und die Oboen da caccia (im Tenorregister), um den Klang der schalmeiartigen Doppelrohrblattinstrumente (Salmiya und Zurna) des Nahen Ostens zu imitieren. Das einleitende Ritornell bringt den polierten Glanz seines Orchesters vollendet zur Geltung und schließt mit einem Unisono-Vortrag des sich über fünf Oktaven erstreckenden Themas. Noch bevor die Stimmen in kanonischer Folge einsetzen, lässt Bach die prachtvolle Prozession der Heiligen Drei Könige und die „Menge der Kamele“, die mit Geschenken beladen sind (und von denen—in einem hier ausgelassenen Vers—bei Jesaja die Rede ist), vor unseren Augen vorüberziehen. Diese imposante Choralfantasie schließt mit einer Wiederholung des Oktavthemas, diesmal von allen Stimmen und Instrumenten vorgetragen, während die Karawane vor der Krippe zum Stillstand kommt. Nun gibt es einen plötzlichen Wechsel in Größenordnung und Stimmung, von der äußerlichen Pracht des königlichen Zuges in die Intimität des schlichten Stalles und zu den Opfergaben, die dem Kind in der Krippe dargebracht werden, während der Chor die nüchterne deutsche Version des lateinischen Chorals „Puer natus est“ anstimmt, der in Leipzig traditionell bei diesem Fest gesungen wird. Darauf folgt ein Secco-Rezitativ, das in seiner Wortausdeutung, seinen Melodiebögen und reichen chromatischen Harmonien beispielhaft ist und in einem ergreifenden Arioso gipfelt. Dieses führt seinerseits zu einer Arie für Bass (Nr. 4), in der sich die beiden Oboen da caccia mit dem Continuo zu einem Tripelkanon formieren, offensichtlich um die Gaben von Gold, Weihrauch und Myrrhe zu schildern. Ein zweites Rezitativ folgt, diesmal für Tenor: Im Tausch für „mein Herz, das ich in Demut zu dir bringe … gib aber dich auch selber mir“. Um „des größten Reichtums Überfluss“ zu schildern, der den Christen „dermaleinst im Himmel“ zuteil werden wird, bedient sich Bach in der hinreißenden Tenor-Arie im Dreiertakt (Nr. 6) einer äußerst üppigen Besetzung. Doppelte Blockflöten, Violinen, Hörner und Oboen da caccia agieren unabhängig voneinander und gemeinsam, tauschen eintaktige Tonfolgen in kaleidoskopartiger Veränderung der Klangfarben aus. Der glühende Schlusschoral (die zehnte Strophe von Paul Gerhardts Lied „Ich hab in Gottes Herz und Sinn“), der auf einer weltlichen französischen Melodie aus dem 16. Jahrhundert basiert, ist englischen Hörern als der Choral „O God, our help in ages past“ vertraut.
