The opening sinfonia of BWV188 Ich habe meine Zuversicht (1728/9) derives from the third movement of the D minor harpsichord concerto BWV1052, of which only the last 45 bars exist in the autograph score. Robert Levin reconstructed the lost 248 bars with characteristic panache. The result is hugely exhilarating. The opening aria is one of the most satisfying of all Bach’s tenor arias: pastoral in mood in its ‘A’ section, with the emphasis on Hoffnung (hope), and aspiring to Zuversicht (trust or confidence in God) rather than asserting it, as the vehement and dramatic ‘B’ section makes clear. It is also singer-friendly, a rarity in Bach’s arias for tenor. A long and distinguished bass recitative, ending with a 6/8 arioso, separates this from the alto aria (No 4), presumably an instrumental movement given to organ obbligato with a voice part added. The final chorale, ‘Auf meinen lieben Gott’, has a tune secular in origin associated with Venus, goddess of love. In Bach’s harmonisation it exudes confidence, trust and power.

La Cantate Ich habe meine Zuversicht («J’ai ma confiance»), BWV188, fut composée en 1728-1729. La Sinfonia d’introduction provient du troisième mouvement du Concerto pour clavecin en ré mineur BWV1052, dont seules les dernières quarante-cinq mesures sont conservées dans la partition autographe. Robert Levin a reconstitué les deux cent quarante huit mesures perdues avec un panache bien dans sa manière. Le résultat en est particulièrement enthousiasmant. Le premier air est l’un des plus gratifiants de Bach pour ténor: de caractère pastoral dans sa section A, l’accent étant mis sur «Hoffnung» (espoir), et aspirant à la «Zuversicht» (assurance ou confiance en Dieu), à défaut de la proclamer, ainsi que sa véhémente et dramatique section B l’indique clairement. Il se révèle également bienveillant envers le soliste, une rareté dans les airs pour ténor de Bach. Un long et élégant récitatif de basse, finissant en arioso à 6/8, le sépare de l’air d’alto (nº 4), probablement un mouvement instrumental octroyé à l’orgue obbligato avec ajout d’une partie vocale. La mélodie du choral de conclusion, «Auf meinen lieben Gott», témoigne d’une origine profane en lien avec Vénus, déesse de l’amour. Dans l’harmonisation de Bach, il respire confiance, assurance et énergie.

Als letztes Werk (und das letzte, das Bach komponierte) stand BWV188 Ich habe meine Zuversicht, von 1728/29, auf unserem Programm. Die einleitende Sinfonia geht auf den dritten Satz des Cembalokonzertes in d-Moll BWV1052 zurück, von dem im Autograph nur die letzten 45 Takte vorhanden sind. Robert Levin hat daher die verlorenen 248 Takte rekonstruiert, und er tat es mit dem ihm eigenen exzellenten Stilgefühl. Das Ergebnis ist eine wahre Freude. Die Eingangsarie gehört zu den gelungensten Arien, die Bach für Tenor geschrieben hat: im „A“-Teil, wo die Betonung auf der Hoffnung liegt, die Zuversicht erst noch erstrebt, nicht schon behauptet wird, pastoral in ihrer Stimmung; im „B“-Teil heftig und dramatisch. Sie ist auch sängerfreundlich, bei Bachs Tenor-Arien eine Seltenheit. Ein langes und vorzügliches Bass-Rezitativ, mit einem Arioso im 6/8-Takt endend, trennt die beiden Arien von der Alt-Arie, vermutlich ein Instrumentalsatz für obligate Orgel, der durch eine Singstimme ergänzt wurde. Dem abschließenden Choral „Auf meinen lieben Gott“ liegt eine Melodie weltlichen Ursprungs zugrunde, die sich auf Venus, die Göttin der Liebe, bezieht. In Bachs Harmonisierung verströmt sie Zuversicht, Vertrauen und Kraft.
