Le drapeau belge, the shortest and musically the slightest of the three recitations, was first performed in April 1917 at London’s Queen’s Hall. By this time, the most brutal war in history had dragged on for more than two and a half years and the wave of enthusiasm that had greeted the 1914 premiere of Carillon had receded. Le drapeau belge is altogether a more modest affair, amounting to little more than the outline of a military march. Nevertheless, this sketchy musical material provides an effective backdrop to the narrator’s encomium upon the symbolic colours of the Belgian flag.

Le drapeau belge, la plus courte et, sur le plan musical, la plus superficielle des trois récitations, fut créé en avril 1917 au Queen’s Hall de Londres. À cette époque, la guerre la plus cruelle de l’histoire traînait en longueur depuis plus de deux ans et demi et la vague d’enthousiasme qui avait accueilli la création de Carillon en 1914 s’était estompée. Le drapeau belge est, tout compte fait, quelque chose de plus modeste, à peine plus que l’ébauche d’une marche militaire. Néanmoins, ce matériel musical sommaire offre une toile de fond au panégyrique des couleurs symboliques du drapeau belge que fait le récitant.

Le drapeau belge, das kürzeste und musikalisch unbedeutendste der drei Stücke, wurde erstmals im April 1917 in der Queen’s Hall in London aufgeführt. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte der brutalste Krieg der Geschichte sich bereits über zweieinhalb Jahre hingezogen und die Welle der Begeisterung, auf die die Premiere von Carillon 1914 gestoßen war, hatte sich deutlich gelegt. Le drapeau belge ist insgesamt schlichter gehalten und beläuft sich auf kaum mehr als die Umrisse eines Militärmarsches. Nichtsdestotrotz stellt dieses bruchstückhafte musikalische Material einen wirkungsvollen Hintergrund zu der Lobrede des Erzählers auf die symbolischen Farben der belgischen Fahne.
