O magnum misterium

composer
Gradualia, 1607
author of text
Responsories at Matins, Christmas Day

Byrd’s setting of this much-loved text was published in the 1607 Gradualia. Beata Virgo, although shown as a separate motet, was intended to follow it immediately in the liturgy. Awe and wonder are fittingly conveyed in music of great simplicity and tenderness.
