Many hymns are drawn from, or inspired by, the tradition of folk song and/or folk poetry. Be thou my vision is a translation of an eighth-century Irish verse prayer, wedded by the editors of The Church Hymnal (an Irish hymnal of 1919) to the now famous melody Slane, taken from Old Irish Folk Music and Songs, a collection of 1909.
