Summer is y' coming in

circa 1840s; SSATBB
author of text

The realization of the thirteenth-century medieval English rota Summer is y’ coming in, in six parts, probably dates from the 1840s. The original version clearly did not appeal to Pearsall’s ears, for in his six-part arrangement, where (as stated in the copy) he ‘attempted to make it acceptable to modern taste’, the canonic idiom was subsumed into a more madrigalian texture of sixteenth-century counterpoint.
