First line:
Last night I had that dream again
author of text

This carol/anthem sets powerful verses by the contemporary poet Michael Symmons Roberts, a frequent collaborator with James MacMillan. The bleakness of the opening section reflects the Virgin Mary's lonely nocturnal doubts over whether she could really be carrying the infant Christ. Blazing and glorious reassurance comes with the rising sun as the fruit of the womb makes His presence felt. Meanwhile, in the fields Joseph wanders, himself a lonely figure, tending his fruit whilst repeating the question: 'Why was my chosen one chosen?'
