Office Hymn at Matins on the Feast of Pentecost

 
The Hymn Solemnis urgebat dies (‘Iam Christus astra ascenderat’) for the Feast of Pentecost uses its plainsong melody for the odd verses set against polyphony for the even ones. A gently decorated form of the chant is quoted in full in the soprano part whilst underneath is an undulating set of lower parts which employ homophony often slightly at variance with the top part, something which gives a constant sense of forward momentum.

L’hymne Solemnis urgebat dies («Iam Christus astra ascenderat») pour la fête de la Pentecôte utilise sa mélodie en plain-chant pour les versets impairs alternant avec la polyphonie pour les versets pairs. Une forme doucement décorée du chant est citée intégralement à la partie de soprano alors qu’au-dessous un ensemble ondulant de parties plus graves emploient l’homophonie souvent sans concordance réelle avec la partie supérieure, ce qui donne une impression constante d’élan en avant.

In dem Hymnus Solemnis urgebat dies („Iam Christus astra ascenderat“) für das Pfingstfest erklingt die Cantus-planus-Melodie in den ungeradzahligen Strophen, während die geradzahligen Strophen polyphon vertont sind. Eine leicht verzierte Version des vollständigen Cantus kommt der Sopranstimme vor, während die darunter liegenden Stimmen sich kräuseln und homophon verlaufen und dabei oft von der Oberstimme etwas abweichen, was für eine stetige, voranschreitende Dynamik sorgt.
