Deus, canticum novum

5vv; first published in 1565
author of text
Responsory on the Fourth Sunday of Easter

First published in 1565, the motet Deus, canticum novum is characterized by its melismas in crotchets, some of them several bars long; the compositional style is smooth and flowing. This is how Lassus chooses to set words such as ‘cantabo’ (‘I shall sing’) and ‘psallam’ (‘I shall praise’).
