Franz Carl Graf Coronini (1818–1910) was raised as a child with the later Emperor Franz Josef; he studied philology and law, was in the army and was a statesman, but also dabbled in writing, including a volume of poetry (Schau’ um dich her: Gedichte, 1881). He corresponded with Liszt’s longtime mistress, the Polish princess Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein (1819–1887), and their letters provide us with further revelations about the personality of the most important woman in Liszt’s life. Coronini was not the greatest poet (to be diplomatic), but his ballad Die Fischerstochter gave Liszt the opportunity for a song that alternates in a highly original way between the lyrical and the dramatic. A fisherman’s daughter yearns for her sailor-lover aboard ship, and each sends the other a bird as emissary (swallow and seagull) after avowals of their love for one another and pleas for the beloved’s return and safety. But a storm at sea sinks the ship, and heartbreak ensues. At the beginning, we hear the same lyrical phrase echoed between the piano’s left hand—Liszt was prone to basso cantante, or ‘singing bass’, melodies—and the singer’s part, followed by a brief, exquisite song to the swallow and the reiterated plangent cry, ‘Geleite ihn’ (Guide him [back to me]). A variation of this same material ensues for the young sailor, who stands leaning against the mast to an unharmonized passage that will remind some of the sailor’s song in scene 1 of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde (the melodies are very different, however), and who then sings a plea to the seagull to protect the sweetheart. The bitter dissonant chords at the close and a final harmony in inversion constitute yet another Lisztian indeterminate ending. This is what happens to love in late Liszt.

Il correspondit avec celle qui fut longtemps la maîtresse de Liszt, la princesse polonaise Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein (1819–1887), et leurs lettres nous apportent davantage de révélations sur la personnalité de la femme la plus importante dans la vie de Liszt. Mais une tempête en mer coule le bateau et il s’ensuit un immense chagrin. Au début, on entend la même phrase lyrique reprise en écho entre la main gauche du piano—Liszt était enclin aux mélodies basso cantante ou «basse chantante»—et la partie vocale, suivie par un chant bref et charmant à l’hirondelle et le cri mélancolique réitéré, «Geleite ihn» («Guide-le» [qu’il me revienne]). Vient ensuite une variation de ce même matériel pour le jeune marin, qui s’appuie sur le mât dans un passage non harmonisé qui rappellera à certains le chant du marin à la scène 1 de Tristan et Isolde de Wagner (les mélodies sont néanmoins très différentes); puis il chante une prière adressée à la mouette pour qu’elle protège sa bien-aimée. Les durs accords dissonants de la conclusion et une harmonie finale en renversement sont un autre dénouement indéterminé typique de Liszt. C’est ce qui arrive à l’amour à la fin de la vie de Liszt.

Er korrespondierte mit Liszts langjähriger Geliebten, der polnischen Fürstin Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein (1819–1887), und ihre Briefe geben weiteren Aufschluß über die Persönlichkeit der wichtigsten Frau in Liszts Leben. Coronini war kein besonders großartiger Poet (um es diplomatisch auszudrücken), doch seine Ballade Die Fischerstochter gab Liszt die Gelegenheit zu einem Lied, das äußerst originell zwischen Lyrik und Dramatik wechselt. Eine Fischerstochter sehnt sich nach ihrem Geliebten, einem Schiffsjungen auf einem Schiff, und sie schicken sich nach Liebesschwüren und Bitten um die sichere Heimkehr des Geliebten gegenseitig einen Vogel (Schwalbe und Möwe) als Boten. Aber ein Meeressturm läßt das Schiff sinken, und „das Herze ist gebrochen“. Am Beginn wird die gleiche lyrische Phrase zwischen der linken Hand des Klaviers (Liszt neigte zu Melodien im basso cantante, oder „singendem Bass“) und der Gesangsstimme wiederholt, gefolgt von einem kurzen, köstlichen Lied für die Schwalbe und dem wiederholten Klageruf: „Geleite ihn“ [zurück zu mir]. Darauf folgt eine Variation des gleichen Materials für den Schiffsjungen, der am Mast angelehnt steht; dazu erklingt eine nicht harmonisierte Passage, die an das Lied des Seemanns in der ersten Szene von Wagners Tristan und Isolde erinnert (die Melodien sind jedoch ganz unterschiedlich), und danach fleht er die Möwe an, seine Liebste zu beschützen. Mit den harten dissonanten Akkorden am Ende und einem letzten harmonischen Wechsel kommt es wiederum zu einem der typisch Lisztschen unbestimmten Abschlüsse. So ergeht es der Liebe beim späten Liszt.
