O God, the proud are risen against me

author of text

This imposing anthem for six-part choir may have come into being for topical reasons. Its words, from Psalm 86, protest against the proud and violent men who ‘are risen against me’ – a sentiment that Byrd’s employer Queen Elizabeth I would have felt when faced with the Northern Rebellion of 1569, or the Babington plot to assassinate her in 1586.
