The Missa Tu es Petrus is in six parts, set for SSATBB. It was first published in 1887 by Haberl on the basis of transcriptions he made from manuscript sources in the Vatican Library. This is a parody Mass based closely on Palestrina’s own motet for the Feast of St Peter and St Paul (published in Rome in his second book of motets in 1572), from which a great deal of the musical material of the Mass is drawn, in places reproducing more or less verbatim the notes of the motet, particularly in the opening of most of the main movements of the Mass. The motet, which precedes the Mass in the recording, is written in a bright major tonality, and has a very clear antiphonal structure in which constantly varying combinations of voices pass phrases of the text back and forth to great effect, giving the whole a wonderfully joyous and uplifting quality. The Mass embodies much similar music, adapted of course to the words of the Mass, but also introduces new music using a more fugal style, sometimes with extensive passages of figuration, which enriches and widens the scope of the Mass.

Haberl donna la première édition de la Missa Tu es Petrus, à six parties (SSATBB), en 1887, sur la base de transcriptions réalisées par ses soins à partir de sources manuscrites conservées à la Vaticane. Cette messe-parodie est étroitement fondée sur le motet écrit par Palestrina pour la fête de saint Pierre et saint Paul (paru à Rome dans son second livre de motets, en 1572), d’où elle tire l’essentiel de son matériel musical—par endroits, surtout au début de presque tous ses principaux mouvements, elle reproduit même plus ou moins à l’identique les notes du motet. Ce dernier, qui précède la messe sur ce disque, adopte une tonalité majeure lumineuse et une texture antiphonée limpide, où des combinaisons vocales sans cesse changeantes se passent et se repassent des phrases du texte avec beaucoup d’effet, conférant à l’ensemble une dimension merveilleusement joyeuse et édifiante. La messe intègre une musique très semblable adaptée, bien sûr, à son texte, mais en introduit aussi une nouvelle au style davantage fugué avec, parfois, de vastes passages de figuration, qui l’enrichit et lui donne de l’ampleur.

Die Missa Tu es Petrus (sechsstimmig, SSATBB) wurde erstmals im Jahre 1887 von Haberl herausgegeben, der dabei Transkriptionen verwandte, die er von Manuskriptquellen in der Vatikanischen Bibliothek angefertigt hatte. Es ist dies eine Parodiemesse, die eng an Palestrinas eigener Motette für den Festtag von St. Peter und St. Paul (die 1572 in Rom in seinem zweiten Motetten-Buch herausgegeben wurde) orientiert ist. Ein großer Teil des musikalischen Materials der Messe stammt aus der Motette, stellenweise wird die Motette sogar direkt zitiert, insbesondere zu Beginn fast aller großen Sätze der Messe. Die Motette, die der Messe in der vorliegenden Aufnahme vorangestellt ist, steht in einer strahlenden Tonart und hat eine sehr deutliche antiphonische Struktur, wobei stets unterschiedliche Stimmkombinationen die Textphrasen sehr effektvoll herumreichen, was dem Ganzen eine besonders fröhliche und erhebende Wirkung verleiht. In der Messe kommt viel ähnliche Musik vor, natürlich entsprechend dem Messetext angepasst, doch erklingt hier auch neue Musik in einem eher fugalen Stil, zuweilen mit ausgedehnten Figurationspassagen, was den Rahmen der Messe erweitert und bereichert.
