'The strength of Tenebrae, their brand, if you like, is the breadth of range from almost kitschy murmuring to the full-throated beltissimo. The former brings welcome intimacy to the Britten Hymn to St Cecilia, while the latter powerfully propels Holst's Psalm 148 to its conclusion, albeit in youthful, fresh-sounding style. The album ends with that locus classicus of English choral singing, Faire is the Heaven, in which one would be forgiven for thinking Spenser's final words,'such endlesse perfectnesse' refer to the choir themselves rather than the state of Heaven. Some successful spatial effects in the engineering, and overall nicely captured' (BBC Music Magazine)

Allegri: Miserere & the music of Rome
Studio Master: CDA67860  Studio Master FLAC & ALAC downloads available

‘This recording's breadth of moods, devices and styles is refreshing. As a compendium of practices, the Mass gives vocalists many opportunities to dazzle the listener, whether through finely-wrought imitation, diversity of texture, or triumphant confluence of three choirs into one. Thanks to Andrew Carwood's directorship, the contrasting effects of these practices are immediately audible … more importantly, the vocalists use declamation to emote, transporting the listener from sorrow to transcendent joy’ (BBC Music Magazine)

‘The chief delight of this new treasure from The Cardinall's Musick is not the titular Miserere but the Missa Cantantibus organis, an extraordinary 12 part mass by seven composers, written as a tribute to Cecilia, patron saint of music … sung here with the brilliance and clarity we have come to expect from this outstanding ensemble’ (The Observer)

‘The Cardinall's Musick proceed to give the Miserere perhaps its finest recorded performance. Using female sopranos as he does is of course inauthentic, but Carwood is vindicated by their bell-like clarity and thrilling projection, way beyond anything you could get from boy trebles … the triumphant success of this disc is much enhanced by the vividness of the recording’ (The Mail on Sunday)

Alnaes & Sinding: Piano Concertos
CDA67555

‘You're going to love this disc. It does everything this wonderful series of 'Romantic Piano Concertos' is supposed to: present captivating repertoire in excellent performances … Piers Lane plays both concertos with a confidence that belies their unfamiliarity, and you know that Andrew Litton and the Bergen orchestra will do their bit like real pros. Excellent sound completes the picture. A genuine find!’ (Classics Today)

„Sinding's 30-minute-long concerto blossoms here in a way that makes one long to experience the work live in the concert hall … its heroic nobility, dramatic projection of theatre and beautiful colouristic shifts make for genuinely uplifting listening … the new Hyperion recording will lead to more live performances of what is unquestionably a worthy, exciting and optimistic work“ (Piano, Germany)

‘Despite the obscurity of this music, Piers Lane plays it with confidence and insight. The Bergen Philharmonic, under its music director Andrew Litton, provides solid, stylish support and the recording is spacious and ideally balanced’ (The Daily Telegraph)
