No earth-shattering discoveries here, for reconstructing the first performance simply means using Süssmayr’s completion, newly edited, and the sort of performing forces—just 16 choral singers, including four who double as soloists—heard at the 1793 benefit for Mozart’s widow. Butt directs a texturally transparent yet singularly powerful reading. A less inspired, earlier Misericordias Domini completes the disc.
